Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the deal early this morning, citing the direct involvement of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other senior officials. According to Rubio, further talks are expected to be held at a neutral venue in the coming days to solidify the agreement and prevent future flare-ups.
The ceasefire follows one of the most severe military escalations in recent years between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Tensions erupted after Indian precision airstrikes targeted multiple Pakistani airbases earlier this week. In response, Pakistan launched a full-scale retaliatory strike on Indian military targets last night. While both sides claim to have inflicted heavy damage, independent verification remains elusive.
